So you finally settled into one of the best apartments in southwest Austin and you're enjoying your new place to call home, but it’s the end of the work week and you want to check out the neighborhood! Newcomers to Austin quickly learn that the highest concentration of bars and restaurants lie downtown along the north side of the river. However, you’ll find that you don’t have to go all the way downtown for cold drinks, hot food and friendly folks. Here are some suggestions of our favorite happy hour spots south of the river to check out. Just a short drive away from our southwest Austin apartments, you may quickly find yourself a regular at these favorite local establishments!
The Broken Spoke
An Austin legend, The Broken Spoke is a little honky-tonk on 3201 S Lamar Blvd that has been the home for Texas musicians dating back to Bob Wills and the Texas Playboy. If you like to dance, this is the place to go. They have a relatively late happy hour starting at eight and going to ten in the evening with reduced prices on all drinks.
For those looking to catch a game or just like the company of fellow fans, you might want to give Red’s Porch a try. Located on 3508 S Lamar Blvd, Red’s Porch offers a large open air patio with a horseshoe pit, and a second story bar where you can catch a view of the Greenbelt. There’s no need to hurry as drink specials run from 11 am to 7 pm, with well drinks for $3 and local beers for $2. Food specials run from 4 pm to 7 pm with fried grit cakes and Frito pies for only four dollars. Gluten-free items are also available!
If you are looking for something a little upscale for happy hour, then Uchi at South 801 Lamar is the place for you. This traditional Japanese restaurant is a favorite for foodies with a great wine selection. From 5 to 6:30 daily you can get discounts on their chef’s specialties and $3 sake.
Barlata Tapas Bar
Barlata Tapas Bar at 1500 South Lamar is a trendsetter with an international flair. Housed in a former industrial warehouse, it specializes in Catalan cuisine. Happy hour is five to seven, Sunday through Thursday. You’ll find nightly drink and tapas specials along with a wine and paella pairing.
For the definitive neighborhood bar (even if it isn’t your neighborhood), then Boomerz is your bar. A little further out from downtown at 6148 US 290, it comes with all the amenities of your youth such as a jukebox, pool tables, and even Karaoke. Drinks special from open to 7 pm with a free shot on your birthday.
Once Over Coffee Bar
For the sake of diversity, we draw your attention to a coffee alternative for happy hour. Open 7 to 7, the Once Over Coffee Bar on 2009 S 1st Street is one of the most popular cafés south of the river for those looking for a caffeine pick me up. Once inside you’ll find a cozy setting which opens up on a beautiful patio overlooking a creek. Beer and wine is also available. Best of all, your canine best friend is also welcome!
